The Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion launched their 2013 Poppy Appeal with a dinner dance at the Alhaurin Golf Club on Saturday the 3rd of November. Although the arrangements were for a 7.30pm for 8pm start, Endessa helped launch the appeal with a bang by cutting the power at 5pm. Undeterred by this minor complication, members and guests gathered around the bar in candlelight and swapped tales of dinner in the dark in various locations around the world. Fortunately Endessa restored the power at 7.45pm and enabled about 70 revellers to enjoy an evening they will remember for a very long time.
The food was outstanding and the staff of Alhaurin Golf served it with style. The Spanish style roast lamb was a clear favourite and was washed down with a significant quantity of fine wine. The evening’s entertainment was provided by Karl Knight who proved to be an instant success. From the very first number, the dance floor was full and he managed to involve the ladies and then the gents in some pantomime that had people simply rolling with laughter. Ray Bower “The Wizard” can be seen here leading the Fabulous Four in a number that brought most people to tears.
Last year’s Poppy Appeal raised a total of €11,669.65 and the Poppy Appeal Officer, Vic Dean, was hoping to launch this year’s appeal with a flying start. At the end of the evening, Chairman Jo Taylor was over the moon to announce that the profit from this one event was a fantastic €688.
